Visitant is a work for string quartet and fixed electronics. The piece is loosely inspired by Electronic Voice Phenomenon, spirit boxes, and electromagnetic field detection. The electronics are built from radio-derived sound, including scanned frequencies, heavily distorted speech fragments, static, and vinyl crackle. These materials are treated less as effects and more as signals, suggesting the act of listening for something at the edge of audibility.
The string quartet moves slowly, primarily through sustained chords, functioning as a stable physical presence against the unstable and fragmentary electronic layer. The resulting sound world is liminal and eerie, shaped by the tension between clarity and interference, and by the idea of sound as a medium through which something unseen briefly passes.
