Anabiosis
flute, percussion and live electronics

Anabiosis explores the alteration of acoustic timbre with electronic means. In this work, the timbral content of the acoustic flute and percussion sound, and the sonic world of the electronic sound create both opposition and integration. The resultant sound encourages the audience to question the boundary of electronic and acoustic sound, the processed and the unprocessed, and the human and the machine.
Anabiosis is the act of recovering from a temporary state of suspended animation, in which biological functions stop, but psychological functions are preserved - a return to life after an apparent death. The ambiguity of the title and its abstract relationship to the sound material of the piece introduces a sense of unease. In fact, clarity is never truly achieved throughout the course of the piece, only a developing metastasis of timbre and intensity.
