STRATA is a three-movement work that reflects on time, layering, and transformation, drawing inspiration from geological processes. In geology, lamination refers to the fine, distinct layers of sediment that gradually accumulate over time, while bedding planes are the surfaces that separate different layers of rock, marking shifts in environmental conditions. These ideas shape the structure of the piece.
The outer movements, Lamination I and Lamination II, unfold as canons, with the harp initiating each phrase, followed by the viola and flute, mirroring the slow accumulation and subtle evolution of layered formations. The central movement, Bedding Planes, explores textures reminiscent of the natural world, evoking the delicate balance of ecosystems and the quiet force of change.
